The Youth Action Corps (YAC) is a creative youth leadership program for high school and early college-aged youth. YAC members work together to support Ironwood Tree Experience by providing a youth voice and leadership for programs and events.

YAC teens embrace their love of nature, people, and community by engaging in activities, initiatives, internships, and programs through Conservation & Restoration, Environmental Education, and Sustainable Community Development!

Organ Pipe Cactus NM

Any youth who has participated in previous ITE programs are automatically a YAC member. All YAC members are encouraged to participate in fun monthly YAC workshops at Ironwood Tree Experience – Urban Field Station, where young people meet friends, share stories, and become part of committees that are making a difference in the community.

We are fortunate to have a dedicated YAC Coordinator. Lena Porell comes to ITE as a UA graduate student and a Peace Corps Coverdell Fellow. She is passionate about nature, sustainable communities, and youth who are the leaders in a new world vision!

Ajang

I spent the early years of my life in Kenya, coming to the US with my mom and brothers under the refugee program. Settling in Tucson I graduated from Cholla High School and I am now attending Pima Community College.

My experiences with ITE include camping, backpacking and participating the the EcoMonitoring program where I deployed wildlife cameras in Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument and Saguaro National Park with the NPS Sonoran Desert Network.

I am now currently serving as a youth representative for climate action and I hope to become a physician and help people around the world.

“Growing up in Tucson, I’ve always been surrounded by the purple mountain ranges and jade green ecosystems. I was taught from a young age by my people how to respect the earth, how to live around it, and how to not overuse the land. My interest in nature and culture goes deep into my people’s history. We are told stories of our ancestors; we descend from these wise insects that roamed the land and only took what they needed. We practice these same rituals today to protect our earth.”
