Youth Ambassadors for Southwest Cultures. During a time where conversations are more global than they are local, our connection to place and community has never been so important. Youth Ambassador Interns explore, experience and connect our community to the various stories and realities that make the borderlands, Sonoran Desert and sky islands mountains so diverse and resilient. In fact, the skills youth practice within this internship ranging from remote hikes in wilderness to exploring the back alleys and backs stories of our urban ecosystem are paramount to staying informed in these changing times. Youth Ambassadors are responsible for structuring, facilitating, and filming a 3-5 minute long interpretive presentation around selected research topics.
Project Description: Interns will participate in a holistic, bioregional, cultural experience rooted in ecology throughout Southeastern Arizona and meet experts and document the stories of the diverse communities living along the Santa Cruz river between Nogales and Tucson, AZ. Interns will explore natural environments and human cultures in order to develop interactive presentations for the Juan Bautista De Anza National Historic Trail which will be used to directly serve public schools in Southeastern Arizona.
Adventure and Learning: Interns earn $75 working with National Park Service rangers and Ironwood Tree Experience staff to develop strong interpretive presentation skills and an in-depth understanding of the natural and cultural history of the Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail. Interns are required to attend all after-school sessions, weekend field trips, and trips to Tumacacori National Historical Park.
High School Internship Field Dates: March 6, 13, 20, 27 (Exact dates subject to change depending upon Covid-19 status)
