Farmers’ Market and Sustainable Food Systems

Food with a Face
ITE supports Sustainable Food Systems which include; organic foods, free trade foods, locally grown foods and food products, and local vendors. Farmers’ Markets and Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) are great ways to derive nutritious, authentic foods while supporting local food producers, local economies, healthy ecosystems, open space and farmlands, rural lifestyles, genetic diversity and small businesses.
Connecting the food we eat with the producers and growers puts a face to the essence of our physical existence and creates a sense of community and authenticity to our nutritional experiences.
Why does ITE operate a farmers’ market?
Farmers’ Markets help support ITE’s mission in several ways. One way is that revenue derived from vendors (through stall fees) for the coordination and management of the markets go directly into supporting ITE operations and programs.
Another reason why ITE operates farmers’ markets is that healthy greens, fruits, nuts and cheeses are purchased from the markets for ITE programming. Quality foods and exercise are major components of youth wellness and an essential part of all ITE eco-experiences. Teens meet farmers and vendors at the markets, purchase foods, prepare meals and consume nutritious foods that have a direct link between the teen and the food, land, people, health and community. Simply put, farmers’ markets are an integral part of ITE programming.
Additionally, farmers’ markets connect ITE with the community in a positive collaborative
way. Farmers’ markets are a venue for learning and experiencing community at its best through face to face contact, sensory experiences of tastes, smells and sounds, and social experiences across racial, professional, age and socio-economic borders.
